WARNING: The SuperCoach team outlined below does not constitute a recommendation. I’m probably much too one-eyed for this team to win any competition, though I have tried to balance out the yeller and blacks with a much better AFL-wide contingent than last year. But don’t take my advice: you have been warned.
The Starting 22(in order down the field: Defenders, midfield, rucks, forwards)
- (HAW) 1. HODGE, Luke $635,300. Gotta have Hodgey. Much more of a heart decision than a head one, given that he’s probably a little overpriced, but he’ll be a consistent points winner.
- (GEE) 2. HARLEY, Tom $353,900. Another player who is there partly because you just have to love the way he goes about the game. Will obviously play every week, and get plenty of ball.
- (ESS) 3. RYDER, Patrick $338,900. I probably just hang around too many Essendon supporters and have started to believe the hype.
- (PTA) 4. PETTIGREW, Michael $302,300. Partly a token inter-stater. Partly because it’s a PA player that I recognise.
- (RIC) 5. RAINES, Andrew $279,900. Chances are every man and his dog is on the Raines bandwagon. He’s a much safer risk than M. Coughlan would have been.
- (RIC) 6. THURSFIELD, Will $253,000. Will will play every game. And he’s one of my favourites, it’s been awesome to watch him develop.
- (CAR) 7. HARTLETT, Adam $165,500. Another case of believing the hype. Got to bet on a few kids and he’s one of them.
- (GEE) 8. BARTEL, Jimmy $623,300. They don’t give out Brownlows in premiership teams without a fairly impressive guy. Will continue to pick up possessions while the defensive focus has to continue to be on Ablett.
- (NTH) 9. HARVEY, Brent $605,400. This is a bet that the Roos won’t disappear out of contention this year, because if they’re in the eight (or thereabouts) then Harvey will have a big year. It’s that simple.
- (CAR) 10. JUDD, Chris $594,500. Was a toss-up between Judd and Ablett. Hard to argue that Judd isn’t the better value option
- (HAW) 11. MITCHELL, Sam. $545,500. Seems to me that Sam Mitchell is a little bit underrated. Ofcourse, he probably is another of those players in the side because I just like how he goes about his footy.
- (RIC) 12. FOLEY, Nathan $474,500. If they put their best tagger on Cuz, then Axel will tear the comp apart. Dark horse (very dark) for brownlow this year.
- (RIC) 13. COUSINS, Ben $465,000. The other side of the bet above is that if they don’t tag him hard, then Cuz will do the same. Plus what’s the point in recruiting a Brownlow medallist if you’re not going to put him in your Supercoach side.
- (NTH) 14. MCINTOSH, Hamish $335,300. Will be spurred on to have a big year after being put on the trade list. He’s also one of those ruckmen who kicks goals, which in this game is worthwhile.
- (BRL) 15. LEUENBERGER, Matthew $212,700. Just a feeling that he’ll be up for a big year. Plus he was cheap
- (RIC) 16. RICHARDSON, Matthew $525,700. Richoooooooo! Enough said
- (HAW) 17. ROUGHEAD, Jarryd $461,000. My favourite player without a gold sash across his chest. Heart decision, plus there’s the unwritten law that you’ve gotta have at least one Ginger Ninja.
- (WCE) 18. KENNEDY, Josh J. $332,200. Good kid who looks ready to become a really great player.
- (RIC) 19. RIEWOLDT, Jack $311,700. Make or break year for Jack, and I reckon he could just make it. Better chance than Cleve anyway.
- (NTH) 20. HANSEN, Lachie $294,500. Gut feel more than cold hard facts.
- (ESS) 21. NEAGLE, Jay $227,600. See Patrick Ryder.
- (MEL) 22. WATTS, Jack $174,200. Unwritten rule number two: always get the number one draft pick
Interchange (aka – profit betting)
- (RIC) 23. RANCE, Alex $94,200. He’s cheap, shown promise, and will hopefully get a game sometime soon.
- (STK) 24. DAWSON, Zac $87,400. Picked to play Round 1, and cost nothing. St Kilda aren’t going to have key position backmen for a while yet, and he should hopefully make the best of his opportunities.
- (COL) 25. SIDEBOTTOM, Steele $124,200. Ain’t no hype like Collingwood hype. But this kid looks alright.
- (COL) 26. BEAMS, Dayne $94,200. Ditto
- (ADE) 27. TIPPETT, Kurt $282,600. Back from pretty serious injury trouble, and has torn NAB cup/challenge matches apart. Also, a ruckman who goes forward.
- (WCE) 28. NAITANUI, Nick $169,200. Mostly the hair. Getting picked 2nd in the draft doesn’t hurt either.
- (NTH) 29. ZIEBELL, Jack $134,200. Kid has impressed down at North, and looked good in the NAB cup game I saw. Should play games for little financial outlay.
- (CAR) 30. GARLETT, Jeff $94,400. Will play round one. At that price, that’s enough for me.

Okay. Harley is out for Half the season, look else where. Word is Jack Watts will play little this year, There are probably better choices early. Tippett is way way too expensive as a backup ruck. You are better off risking a 0 and getting Jacobs or Spencer or even Sellar (that might play defense as some point) then have 200K extra in your bench rucks. Same with Naitanui. I think he is injured and likely not too play early. You are unlikely to get much value you trading a ruck so you are better off assuming you might have to trade for a long term injury and take the extra 300K and upgrade Harley too Mackie or someone.
Just some suggestions. Didn’t touch too much on the others because they could do the job.

Wow – that’s pretty thorough. Had forgotten how serious this game is. Have swapped Harley for Newman; Naitanui for Andrew Browne (RICH) – he’s odds on to get added to the senior list and the 22 for Thursday night off the rookie list. I’m leaving Tippett, because I don’t trust my two main rucks to get picked every week, and there’s also a big chance his stocks will improve dramatically and I can sell him off anyway. Thanks for the help though!

I should have mentioned thats just some thoughts and I could be proven very wrong. We have a bit of a Chat feast on Fantasy Footy at the Coaches Box Podcast and I think its more putting out some ideas rather then giving you the perfect squad, as lets face it, I haven’t won a fantasy comp yet!!!
All the best!
