I love Nathan Brown. There’s no player I’d rather see with the ball in his hand in front of the goals, and he certainly possesses one of the best football brains going. But as I looked down the Herald Sun’s list of highest paid players, I couldn’t help but think that Browny is punching above his weight in the bank account stakes. The list:
$1 million plus
Chris Judd (Carlton)Jonathan Brown (Brisbane)
$700,000-800,000Nick Riewoldt (St Kilda)
Matthew Pavlich (Fremantle)
Barry Hall (Sydney)
Matthew Richardson (Richmond)
Matthew Lloyd (Essendon)
$600,000-700,000
Simon Black (Brisbane)
Daniel Kerr (West Coast)
Chad Cornes (Port Adelaide)
$500,000-600,000
Brent Harvey (North Melbourne)
Brad Johnson (Western Bulldogs)
Brendan Fevola (Carlton)
Nick Stevens (Carlton)
Matthew Scarlett (Geelong)
Gary Ablett (Geelong)
Luke Hodge (Hawthorn)
Sam Mitchell (Hawthorn)
Luke Power (Brisbane)
Anthony Rocca (Collingwood)
Nathan Brown (Richmond)
Adam Goodes (Sydney)
Aaron Sandilands (Fremantle)
Dean Cox (West Coast)
Peter Bell (Fremantle)
Scott Lucas (Essendon)
Andrew McLeod (Adelaide)
Luke Ball (St Kilda)
I’m as die-hard Tiger as you get, but the only other players I can see who doesn’t deserve to be on that list is Anthony Rocca, and perhaps Peter Bell these days. This is in no way a criticism of Browny or even the club: when he was signed on a long term contract he was in peak condition and one of the elite in the competition; hindered by no fault of anyone that his leg snapped like charcoal.
What do other people think – is Browny being over-compensated?

I would also add Llyod, Stevens and Lucas to that list

No way Scott Lucas is overpaid. An injury free Scott Lucas would have boosted Essendon a couple of places on the ladder at least. Lloyd is essentially being rewarded for being the best full-forward in the league for the past decade. Stevens might be a fair call.

Yes but on what they did last year injury or not. Lucas and Lloyd are over paid…

You’d cut the pay of players who get injured? I’m just talking about Lucas missing games.

nah you do not but Lucas has been injured for a bit now…
I just do not believe that performance wise for the last two years Lucas, Lloyd and Stevens deserve their pay rate. I do agree that history does count for something including when your about to retire but on figures and performance alone they do not deserve it.

I guess it’s all to do with those long term contracts. Often they are paid more in later years as clubs try to squeeze marquee players into their cap.
It’s hard to justify all those players being paid what they are now-Stevens, Lucas and Lloyd being prime examples.
I wonder if Richo didn’t have such a great year last year whether he would be under the same topic of discussion.
What’s interesting is Bell, who’s retired but still being paid pretty well.
Plus Bartel’s not there.

I think if Richo didn’t have a great year last year, we’d be talking about who was going to fill his shoes. The thing about Richo is that he’s been on 1 year contracts for the past 3 or 4 in a row: he’s being paid exactly what the heirarchy believe he’s worth.
