Round 7 Preview - Can we beat the Saints?

Bowden and HamillWhy We Will Win

Form. It’s a little bit sad that a win, a draw and a loss in the past three games beats anything we’ve seen from the Tigers in the past few years, but we do look like a better team than we’ve been in quite a while. Pressure on our opposition, as well as a willingness to find non-Richo routes to goal point to some really positive signs for the team. St Kilda, on the other hand, look unimpressive at the moment.

Thursfield has matched up well on Riewoldt in the past, and is likely to get the gig again, likely putting Kelvin Moore on the injury-hampered Gehrig.

Why We Won’t Win

The teams on paper. It’s got to be only a matter of time before St Kilda start making it all work together with the great list of names they put into the Record every week. Players like Hayes, Riewoldt, Montagna, Milne, Koschitzke, Gehrig etc. can all tear games apart on their day, and it only takes one or two of them to do that for the Saints to run away with the game. Last time we played the Saints Montagna ripped us to shreds in the middle, and we copped a thumping.

The other big concern I’d have going into the game is that we seem to be quite susceptible to a big game from a small forward. Collingwood through Paul Medhurst (who admittedly is having a great season) did it to us in round 3, likewise the Kangaroos. So players like Schneider (back in) and Milne are real dangers in a forward line more recognised for their talls.

Curious Decision-Making

While Wallace is persisting with the new “not-picking-Joel-Bowden” policy (despite Coburg coach Jade Rawling singing his praises at every opportunity), Ross Lyon has promoted Fraser Gehrig into the side despire lacklustre VFL form. Lyon’s argument was that Gehrig has had a good record against Richmond, and it will be interesting to see how the two approaches stack up.

Should be an interesting match. I’ve tipped the Tigers, mainly cos I’m over the way the Saints are playing this season.
