Round 5 vs Western Bulldogs - We didn’t lose!

Posted on April 22, 2008 | Category: Match Reports

Western Bulldogs 19.16 (130)

Richmond 20.10 (130)

The Game

What do you say? In a game where we were expected to get blown away: we almost won. But it was a game where we had a 19 point lead late in the game, and lost. Lots to process, and to make matters worse: I didn’t get to see the game.

The Good

20 goals! Two weeks in a row! Who’d have thought that the best way to improve our forward efficiency was to remove our full forward and leading goalkicker. But we’ve finally found avenues to goal. Riewoldt is starting to show something: kicking 3, and Morton and Edwards have continued to show something kicking a couple each. It’s no surprise that Wallace opted to re-jig the forward setup after the disgrace against Collingwood, the real surprise is that it’s working.

The Bad

An inability to play tempo footy. Or defending way too early in the final quarter. Either way you look at it, we lost a game we could (and should) have won. It’s not a great sign that we had 130 points kicked against us either.

The Votes

3 - Kane Johnson

2 - Matthew Richardson

1 - Nathan Foley

The Final Word

Jake King should hopefully shrug off ridiculous talk of “what-if” around “that” rushed behind, but on the whole we’ve got to take this as a positive. If we can snag a win in the next three weeks, the season is set up to make a really decent run at ninth.
