Does anyone else remember the time when after a particularly ordinary performance in 2001, one of Richmond’s coterie members left a truckload of chicken manure outside the front doors of Punt Road. Little did we know at the time, but the powers that be obviously took things into their own hands from there and moved the poo onto the oval, because Andrew Demetriou has had a look at the playing surface and declared it to be (in his professional opinion) “crap”.
This must have triggered something deep inside Terry Wallace’s subconscious, because barely had the words escaped the AFL Boss’ lips and he was onto it quicker than Nathan Foley onto a loose ball. Immediately, Wallace sensed the opportunity to make another excuse for why Richmond has been pathetic over his time in charge, relating that we’d had 8 stress-related injuries as a direct result of training on a dodgy surface.
You know what? Even if that’s exactly what happened, and our boys training at the Lexus Centre would have won us three flags by now - I’m sick of hearing about it. For a brief while we actually talked about not making excuses, about taking responsibility for the worst season in the history of the club, and actually sounded like we weren’t going to pretend that we were just really ridiculously unlucky. Wallace is desperate to protect his job, and the excuses are becoming more and more ludicrous.
We’ve shown a hell of a lot of patience with this team, we’ve taken it on board that we shouldn’t just sack a coach because we end up with the wooden spoon, but it’s time that you actually just produced some results that convince us that you’re worth keeping around. And if we hear another pathetic excuse about how Richmond just haven’t had the luck of other teams, you should be sacked on the spot. I like you Terry, and I think we made a good decision in employing you, but for goodness sake, just get out there and prove it.
