Round 9 - Been A Long Time…

Posted on May 28, 2006 | Category: Uncategorized

(…been a long time, been a long lonely lonely lonely lonely lonely time)

In 1990, I was 6 years old. Gary Ablett Senior was at the peak of his powers. Richmond had just come off the back of a wooden spoon. 1990 is a long time ago in football. Richmond had not won a game at Kardinia Park (now Skilled Stadium) since 1990.

There was no real reason to believe that this time should be any different. Geelong had a lot to prove, and Richmond had come off an ugly, although commendable win over the Crows. We should have been beaten. We are a much less skilled side than Geelong, and we are still brutally undermanned in defence.

But we won. And this time we won not by playing an ugly, basketball style game, but by playing an attacking, free flowing game that everybody loves to watch. And again, it was the players who last year looked lucky to be on an AFL list that stood up. Troy Simmonds is a real chance to take out our Best and Fairest - last year he was stuggling to get a match. Kayne Pettifer has transformed into a real player, and Danny Meyer still looks 10kg too light, but he was more than just useful. Greg Tivendale, the bane of most Tigers supporters lives, stood up on occassion and kicked a great goal of a lucky free kick.

I still maintain that we are not a good side - we will probably not make finals. But we are a courageous side, and a side who will fight against all odds. We are not a good side, but we are turning into one

Richmond 17.8 (110)

Geelong 12.18 (90)
