Round 6: A Tale of Two Debutants

Posted on May 7, 2006 | Category: Uncategorized

28 possessions is a good day out if you are anyone. You would be happy with 3 goals - especially if you’re a midfielder. Best on ground is always a nice thing to get - particularly in a game when you get recognised with a nice award. But for these things to happen in your debut match: that’s an incredible feat. Dean Polo. Remember the name. Pretty soon you won’t have to. The kid was playing out at Box Hill on Anzac Day and my little brother saw the game - he immediately declared that the Polo kid would be a player. In a side that couldn’t find the goals to save themselves, to score 3 goals straight, including the goal to draw level, warms the heart of every Tiger supporter.

Another blonde skinny looking player had a memorable night, but for slightly different reasons. Kayne Pettifer. Generally a solid small forward who last year started cementing his place in the team as a decent small forward. He too had an auspicious debut. I vividly remember, I was watching him cause he’d taken the number 8 that had been worn by Mark Merenda - who’d been a bit of a cult hero. He didn’t get much of a run early, but then he came on in the third quarter and kicked a couple of goals at crucial times - and just looked like if he could get a bit of muscle and toughness about him he’d have the football brain to be a real superstar. Unfortunately, fast forward 5 years and the story is pretty much the same. He is the epitome of the frustrating footbaler, he could be so good if he was just a bit tougher. As it is he’s likely to remain a fringe player. And if he ever kicks 1 goal and 5 behinds in a match again, there’ll be trouble.
